(via BBC) "The report, from the World Institute for Development Economics Research at the UN University, says that the poorer half of the world's population own barely 1% of global wealth." Read the article here. This article isn't that special or surprising, but it reminds me that I must spend my life finding ways to end poverty in the ways I am best suited. What is the point of being spiritual if we do not challenge our dependence on structural violence and systematic poverty? Do not forget that much of the clothes you wear, the food you eat, the homes you live in, and the lives you lead depend upon great suffering from large amounts of people who were born into more difficult lives. What is it about human nature that allowed this to happen? Will this change any time soon, and if so, how? Will global interdependence and increasing transparency allow us to see the tremendous hidden violence in our seemingly innocent, materialistic lives? I should be weeping everyday at all the starvation and slaughter of children and women, the torture of innocent men, and the tremendous violence that is perpetrated to maintain a false sense of certainty and stability in the world.
